In our modern age communication and socialising is one of the main goals of any mobile device platform. One of the main site’s used for this communication is Facebook.

Giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

So of course I had to give an in-depth review of the Facebook application available on all Android devices. At the publishing of this review the application was at version 1.2.1 and provided a limited, yet more streamlined, approach to the facebook website than you may experience using your mobile’s browser.

First Impressions

My first impressions with the application when using the Dell Streak was simply.

“Oh.”

I wasn’t that impressed with the imagery used or the style, I felt that it just didn’t compare visually to the iPhone, even with the Dell Streaks mass increase of real estate.

However I wasn’t completely let down, it still provided a speedy and more user friendly version of the site than the Touch version.

Application Details

The Facebook application provides access to all the things you expect:

  • News Feed
  • Friends
  • Photos
  • Inbox
  • Profile
  • Notifications

However it sadly lacks a key component of Facebook. Which is its Chat feature. Furthermore it lacks the ability to upload photo’s and from my experience doesn’t show all of your albums but only the profile pictures. Which is quite annoying when I wanted to show my friend my holiday photo’s.

News Feed Friends

However you can’t fault the layout of the application, anyone whose used facebook for over 5minutes will instantly be able to use this application. Furthermore you gain access to nearly all area’s that enable you to contact your friends apart from the Chat. I’m particularly fond of the Notification area due to it’s sheer size on the Dell Streak. Below you will find more images taken from the application of the other sections.

Closing Statement

The Facebook application is a needs must app. While it offers a lot of the functionality of the full website it does not offer a key use which is Chat. Until it does I don’t feel this app is really reaching it’s true potential!
